SUNDAY, January 18th: Ceasefire Day 1
-----------------------

sunday, at 2am begun the israeli-gazan provisional ceasefire. the agreement states that while israeli forces will remain in gaza, they will halt their artillery shelling, air strikes and ground assaults as long as the palestinian resistance groups cease launching projectiles into israeli territory. hamas and other palestinian factions have expressed disagreement with the conditions of the ceasefire, but at present, the position of their military wings in unclear. numerous factions deplored the request that they abandon armed resistance to the israeli invasion and occupation, and hamas leaders criticized the israeli government for negotiating the ceasefire with fatah leader Mahmoud Abbas and a hamas representative in lebanon named Usama Hamdan. hamas' leadership in gaza insisted that THEY are the representatives to be negotiated with, not leaders based in other countries. generally, most factions initially rejected the deal as it did not include a promise of withdrawal of israeli forces from gaza.

later on sunday, hamas and islamic jihad representatives, on behalf of the united palestinian resistance announced that they are willing to enter into a ceasefire, under the condition that israeli forces completely withdrawal from the gaza strip in one week. a hamas official based in syria, Mousa Abu Marzouk stated: "We the Palestinian resistance factions declare a cease-fire from our side in Gaza and we confirm our stance that the enemy's troops must withdraw from Gaza within a week." a second hamas official, Ayman Taha, based in egypt, stated that hamas agrees to the ceasefire, urging israel to open gaza's borders to allow in food, medical supplies and other basic goods. israeli government officials responded to these remarks, stating that they can not establish a timetable for troop withdrawals until there is a complete cessation of rocket fire from gaza. Daoud Shihab, an official with islamic jihad affirmed that his group would also abide by the ceasefire, and stated that "other smaller militant groups" have agreed to follow suit. Shihab announced that the united palestinian resistance would issue a formal statement later on sunday adding, "The resistance won on the ground and now we will go onto the political battle.”

this joint statement of the palestinian resistance was released late sunday and stated: "
We the Palestinian resistant factions, announce a ceasefire from our side in Gaza Strip. We confirm our stance and our demand for Israeli troops to withdraw from Gaza in a week, that Israel opens the borders, and crossing points for humanitarian aid convoys.” this statement was endorsed by hamas, islamic jihad, fatah, the democratic front for the liberation of palestine and "other smaller militant groups" including the popular resistance committees.

only one known palestinian faction, the popular front for the liberation of palestine, rejected the ceasefire plans. in an interview with ma'an news, a PFLP representative stated that the movement was fundamentally opposed to both the previous (June 19th-December 19, 2008) ceasefire as well as the current ceasefire under discussion. it is unclear at this time if the armed wing of the PFLP, the abu ali mustafa brigades will attack israeli forces or launch projectiles at israeli targets in opposition to the ceasefire.

one other previously unknown palestinian faction, calling itself the hezbollah brigades of palestine also appears to be against the proposed ceasefire. though the group has not released any political statements, they have launched at least four projectiles at israeli territory during the ceasefire period.

despite the PFLP and the hezbollah brigades rejecting the ceasefire the plan is underway and israeli forces and palestinian fighters have, for the most part, stopped attacking one another. approximately 10 hours after the start of the ceasefire, israeli forces shot and killed a palestinian civilain. Abd as-Samad Abu Rejlieh, a 24-year-old farmer, was killed as he surveyed damage to his land from the israeli ground assault.
following the killing of Rejlieh, israeli forces injured a mother and her daughter in an attack on a house in beit hanoun, in northern gaza. throughout the unmanned drones flew over gaza and some artillery shelling continued in rafah, injuring a number of people. in easten gaza city's at-tuffah neighborhood, there were reports of continued shelling with white phosphorus. eye witness reports also state that an israeli helicopter opened fire at a group of civilians waiting in line at an ATM near the bank of palestine in jabaliya.

news footage filmed by al-jazeera documented one family returning to their neighborhood following the ceasefire. the family found that their home was destroyed, and that more than 25 bodies were buried in the rubble. medics and recover teams report finding many bodies throughout gaza, many left decaying for multiple days. many of the dead are women and children killed when their homes and shelters were shelled. after tank brigades withdrew from beit lahiya, four bodies were found underneath rubble in the at-atarah neighborhood.

palestinian medics located at least 100 dead bodies on sunday while searching through destroyed buildings and rubble throughout the gaza strip.

- 5 israeli soldiers were shot by brigade fighters

friday, the national resistance brigades, the armed wing of the democratic front for the liberation of palestine, released a military statement summarizing their military activity throughout "operation cast lead." while the brigades claims can not be verified, it is noteworthy to report what they are presenting as fact to the world. according to the national resistance brigades:

- 11 fighters and 2 commanders were killed in clashes with israeli forces and air strikes on homes and cars
- 7 homes belonging to brigade members were targeted in air strikes, as was the DFLP offices in gaza city
- the brigades carried out 17 attacks on israeli forces in cooperation with other brigades
- 88 projectiles were launched at israeli targets
- 60 mortar shells were launched at israeli ground forces
- 26 explosive devices were detonated targeting tanks and occupied homes inhabited by soldiers
- 3 snipers attacks were carried out
- 35 rocket-propelled-grenades were fired at israeli tanks
- 22 armed clashes were reported utilizing machine guns and rocket-propelled-grenades

--------------
since "operation cast lead" began on december 27th, 2008, palestinian resistance fighters have launched at least 571 rockets and 205 mortar shells which struck inside of israeli territory. this does not count rockets and mortars fired at invading soldiers and military forces inside of gaza. these numbers are from the public forum for the israeli military and intelligence services.

hamas, fatah, islamic jihad and other palestinian factions have called for their forces to respond to israel through "any means necessary," signaling a willingness to adopt tactics that have been off the table for some time. fatah announced on sunday that it is instructing its military wings to resume bombing operations inside of israeli territory. hamas also has publicly called for the assassination of israeli officials including the minister of foreign affairs and top candidate for the prime ministership, Tzipi Livni as well as minister of defense Ehud Barak.

following the 1st day of protests, daily demonstrations throughout gaza and the west bank occurred. these daily protests have occured every day, for the first 3 weeks of the invasion. there have been far too many demonstrations, strikes, marchs and independent acts of resistance by the palestinian people to describe.

Hamid was shot three times in the stomach and chest. a second man, Arafat al-Khawaja, 20, was killed when he was shot at a demonstration near ramallah. six other demonstrators were shot and injured. this includes Muhammad al-Khawaja, Arafat's relative, who was shot in the head and critically injured.

monday afternoon in hebron, students at hebron university organized a demonstration in solidarity with gaza. the demonstration was attacked by israeli forces and nine palestinian students were injured. hundreds participated in the demonstration where student leaders spoke to crowds and encouraged palestinian unity in the face of israeli aggression. the demonstrators clashed with israeli soldiers stationed in hebron's old city to protect settlers. some palestinian demonstrators threw stones at the colonial settlements in the city center and southwestern suburbs. the protest occurred during hebron's second day of a general strike in solidarity with gaza.

in a further act of solidarity with the people of gaza, both the west bank and gaza strip will hold a general strike in the days following the massacre.

as more news arrives, the death toll will only climb. if the death toll numbers are confirmed, this would be the bloodiest day in the history of the gaza strip.
