Update: PSP Co Founder Sentenced to 6 Months

Wednesday, April 23, 2008, an Israeli Military Court granted the petition by the Israeli military to hold Palestine Solidarity Project Co-Founder, Mousa Abu Maria, in Administrative Detention for 6 months.

for background on Mousa´s case, check out:

Mousa has not been and will not be charged with anything; Administrative Detention by definition precludes any recourse through the court system. Mousa was in good spirits and is keeping his spirits up. He was happy to see the hundreds of faxes and emails written on his behalf. Though there is one more chance for an appeal, the fact that these decisions are being made by the Israeli military on petitions brought by the Israeli military does not lend itself much hope that a Palestinian justice activist will receive much justice himself.

We are still collecting for his legal fund, please donate via our website at:

images from Salim village

from a roof top in salim village, you can see two palestinian homes, some scattered olive trees, and in the distance, the colonial settlement of elon moreh.

elon moreh is a settlement deep in the nablus region of the northern west bank. it is surrounded to the west and south by an israeli-only road, to the southeast by a trench/moat, an observation post to the south, numerous roadblocks, and is in close proximity to beit furik checkpoint.

elon moreh's location in a highly populated area of the nablus region creates a great deal of problems for the villagers of Salim, Deir al Hatab, Azmut, Beit Furik and others. because of the settlement and its "security needs," palestinians living in these villagers have been denied their freedom of movement, and their communities are often attacked and invaded.

Mousa Abu Maria to Be Placed in Administrative Detention, Support for Legal Fund Needed
April 17th, 2008

Earlier today, April 17, Israeli military officials decided to place Mousa Abu Maria in Administrative Detention. Though we collected over 300 letters of support from more than 12 countries on 5 continents, the Israeli military seems to have decided that, lacking evidence of Mousa’s involvement in any crime, he should be held in prison without trial.

SUPPORT IS STILL NEEDED!

There will be a hearing to determine how long his stay in detention will be (though this can be renewed indefinitely), after which we will begin an appeal process. The support letters have been collected for submission to the court during this process. Additionally,

PLEASE DONATE TO MOUSA’S LEGAL FUND!

Donate individually, organize a benefit, film screening, or house party or write your own letter of appeal to family and friends. Many of you have met Mousa, stayed in his home, ate meals with him and drank tea with his family. He is in need of your help now.

Donations can be made to:

Demonstration In Support of Mousa Abu Maria TOMORROW on Prisoners Day
April 16th, 2008

Tomorrow at 9 am supporters of Mousa Abu Maria, co-founder of the Palestine Solidarity Project, will gather on the Israeli side of Ofer Military Court to protest his arrest and demand his immediate release. Mousa is scheduled to have a hearing on his detention tomorrow morning, though it is possible the hearing will be canceled altogether if the Israeli Military seeks to put him in Administrative Detention, which they have stated they are “favorably considering”.
Tomorrow is also Palestinian Prisoners Day, when thousands of family members and friends of Palestinian women, men, and children in Israeli jails will gather in Ramallah and other cities throughout Palestine to commemorate the more than 11,000 Palestinians who are currently being imprisoned by the Israeli occupation government, and demand their release.

Demand the Immediate Release of Mousa Abu Maria! Act Today!
April 15th, 2008

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Early in the morning of Friday April 11th IDF troops invaded the home of the AbuMaria family and arrested Mousa AbuMaria. Mousa is a well known nonviolent activist and a co-founder of the Palestine Solidarity Project. He has been a lead organizer in peaceful protest involving hundreds of Israelis and internationals and has been committed to popular, unarmed resistance for several years.

When Mousa was arrested his family was not told of the reason of his arrest or his whereabouts.
When his lawyer managed to locate him it turned out he was being held in military jail but still no reason for his arrest was given. Only days later was his lawyer finally told that he was suspected of membership in a terrorist organization but when his interrogation did not turn up any evidence the prosecution has admitted that there ‘may’ not be enough evidence to put him on trial.

With no evidence against him and a long history of nonviolent activism Mousa’s family should be celebrating his impending release. However, the Israeli military court system that presides over Palestinians in the Occupied Territories does not work that way and the prosecution has said they are considering putting Mousa in Administrative Detention, in which he has no right to trial. For Palestinians, when there is no evidence for a trial, they are simply jailed without one. The decision on whether Mousa will be placed in Administrative Detention will most likely be made TOMORROW.

Update: Mousa Abu Maria Recovering
27 January 2008

Mousa Abu Maria, co-founder of PSP, is home recuperating as of tonight, January 26. It is believed that he was in fact hit by a ricochet bullet, which did not fully penetrate his skull. He has shrapnel from the bullet remaining in his head but should make a full recovery. A piece of the bullet hit him just above his left eye, we do not yet know if his vision has been permanently damaged. Thank you to everyone for your calls and support.

PSP will be collecting donations for the Popular Committee of Beit Ommar, who are planning more demonstrations in the coming weeks in response to the attacks on their village by the Israeli Occupation Forces. Please make a donation via our website:

PSP Co-Founder Shot in the Head, Youth Killed in Beit Ommar

25 January 2008

Mohammed Awwad, 18, was killed today in Beit Ommar by the Israeli Occupation Forces. At least 10 others were wounded throughout the day, including Palestine Solidarity Project co-founder Mousa Abu Maria, who was shot in the head but survived. Mohammed’s “crime” was being from Beit Ommar: the same village where two Palestinians who attacked and lightly wounded settlers in Kfar Etzion yesterday were from. The two Palestinians involved in the attack on Israeli settlers yesterday were shot and killed at the settlement. Still, Palestinian residents of Beit Ommar were waiting for the retaliation, which came with a vengeance this morning.

At approximately 11am nearly a dozen jeeps entered Beit Ommar. They went to the center of town to deliver a warrant to the homes of the men shot at the settlement yesterday. The warrant was a demolition order. Though the Israeli Army officially stopped their policy of demolishing homes of the relatives of people who are accused of attacking Israelis, after an international outcry, in reality this form of collective punishment continues. Residents, including PSP co-founder Mousa Abu Maria, began gathering on rooftops to observe what was happening. Mohammed Awwad, no relation to either of the men who attacked the settlement yesterday, was on the street nearby. When the crowd gathered, the soldiers began shooting tear gas and rubber-coated steel bullets and retreated back to the entrance of the village. About an hour later, they returned took aim, and began shooting. Mousa felt a pain in his head and began bleeding profusely. He was taken to the hospital in Hebron as were Mohammed, who was shot fatally, and at least 5 others, most of whom were shot in the legs.

Bethlehem – Ma'an - The freeze on building Israeli settlements announced by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert before the Annapolis summit appears to have come to an end with the announcement by the Israeli Housing Ministry that they are planning to build 1,900 housing units across the West Bank, the Israeli daily newspaper Yediot Ahronot has reported.

According to the newspaper, it's ten years since such large scale plan for settlement building has been proposed. The plan comes in the wake of Olmert's promise to the religious Shas party to revoke the decision to freeze the construction of settlements.

The plan, which was coordinated with Olmert's office, is to build 158 new housing units in the settlement of Efrat south of Bethlehem, 682 units in the settlement of Beitar Illit west of Bethlehem, 160 units in the settlement of Benyamin, near Ramallah, 510 units in Giva't Ze'ev south west of Ramallah, 302 units in the Ma'ale Adumim settlement east of Bethlehem, 48 in Kiryat Arba near Hebron and another 48 units in Ariel, near Salfit.

A number of contractors have begun preparations for the expansion of Givat Ze'ev, with bulldozers ready and waiting for Israeli Defence Minister Ehud Barak to sign the construction plan.
